WIFI FAQ and Technical Data

Starting December 1st 2009, all of our Tortola yachts will have FREE wifi onboard. TMM Is the ONLY company to offer this service in the BVI. Imagine sitting on the deck of your yacht, whilst you check email or find out the latest football scores. It's easy and all you require is your laptop or PDA.

The service is unlimited and offers coverage of approximately 98% of the BVI. A small transmitter, plugged into the boats electrical system which then creates a wifi umbrella extending to around 150ft. You don't need to physically plug your computer into the system so every member of your crew can be online at the same time. Oh and by the way, did we tell you this service is FREE!!

What is the LIME Wireless Gateway?

The LIME wireless Gateway is a wireless router that creates a local WiFi hotspot using LIME Mobile Data Network to connect to the internet.

How do I connect to the LIME Wireless Gateway?

The easiest way to connect to the Gateway is using WiFi from your Laptop or PDA. Simply turn on WiFi on your laptop, search for Wireless Networks and connect to the “LIME Gateway”. Note you may enter in a provided password if the WiFi connection is secure.

 

I don’t have WiFi on my laptop, can I still connect?

Yes you can still connect using a standard Ethernet cable connected to the Gateway.

 

Can I connect with a Apple MAC?

Yes just use the Airport facility on your Apple to connect to the LIME Gateway hotspot.

 

What speeds can I expect to get?

Download and upload speeds are dependant on a number of factors, but typically upload and download speeds will be between 150 and 250 kbps - or for an easier point of reference, about twice the speed of dial up.

Can I pick up service anywhere that I’m sailing?

The service will work in most places within BVI waters but will not work once in the USVI.

Technical Data

The model of Wireless Gateway we are using is the Huawei E968 which combines wifi with 4 ethernet gateways. To produce the wifi umbrella the unit requires a power supply only.
