The crew at the HYC yacht basin were efficient on both the cruise departure and turn in. Our weather and winds were perfect all week and the boat performed well. On many occasions we could count 50 or more sails in view. We would, however, have appreciated an autopilot. We ran into "Foxy" at his beach bar on YVD and again at the "Jolly Roger" in Soper's Hole (Tortola, West End) where he tied up our dinghy for us as we arrived. We enjoyed sitting and chatting with his wife during our dinner there. What fun! Thanks for helping us set up what turned out to be one of our best bareboat cruises.

As always!
2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?
Well, we felt this vessel wasn't kept as nice as the past vessel. Perhaps this boat is used more, but the lights, mainsail, speakers, aircon was a bit faulty. Also the mooring hook was taped together wiht duct tape when went to go use it. Sort of just not perfect condition. Also the cell phone was very poor.
3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?
Yes.
4. Was the boat well ventilated?
Yes
5. Did the staff at Horizon Tortola do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?
Yes, but we suggested that future charters be told how to bleed air out of the aircon water pump. This type of aircon gets flooded with any movement of the boat, and stops the unit. It is easy to do.
6. Did you like the area you cruised?
Very much, our third time.

No / everyone was great.

Horizon's was great. The Bavaria 31 was a complete dog. The cockpit is small and uncomfortable. The large wheel and split backstay leaves only about 16" clearance, which one has to clear while stepping over the seat and ducking the low bimini top. It is so tight that the Horizon's staff actually removes the wheel when the boat is on the dock so they can get in and out-I've never seen this before! The backrests in the cockpit are too low and slanted at an uncomfortable angle. There is no place for the helmsman to sit! The cabin is also very tight- about 6 foot clearance (I'm 6'5"). The boat sails poorly, both slow and lousy going to windward. The slowest boat I've had since we were sailing Morgans 25 years ago! You need to make it clear to customers that this is a boat for only smaller than average people who aren't big sailors. Give me the Benetau 32 any day!

It was a new model, the envy of our flotilla of six boats. We had the newest boat of them all.

All was in perfect condition. One of the furniture latches was missing, and we reported that to Horizon Charters.
4. Was the boat well ventilated?
Yes. Each cabin had a fan and a hatch "hood" to capture breeze from the outside if needed.
5. Did the staff at Horizon Tortola do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?
They were very knowledgeable and polite.
6. Did you like the area you cruised?
Compares well with Cinque Terre in Italy, my favorite vacation spot.

My crew and I are extremely satisfied with all aspects of the trip.

For a first timer it was a bit stressing to arrange transportation from the Airport in St. Thomas USVI to the marina (located in Tortola BVI). Besides we went through customs and Immigration. Although the process turned out to be quite simple, I did not know that in advance. From the tourist's perspective it would be easier if Virgin Island Sailing or Horizon Charters took care of arranging transportation between airport and chartered boat (and then back to the airport).
For me, the days before the trip were kind of hectic trying to get in touch with the different ferry services and coordinating with the other participants. I am lucky that other participants--that had chartered there before--helped me.

In refernce to question #2;
The hull was dirty to the point that it was greatly reducing the speed of the vessel. My crew and I took a morning to dive/snorkel on the hulls to clean them, removing built up seagrass, barnacles, and algae. In addition, the stackpack was in such a state of disrepair that I had to create makeshift fittings and repairs. Aside from these two points, the yacht was wonderful. However, as a paying customer, it was somewhat frustrating having to clean the hulls.

Can't change the weather (it was pretty gusty the entire charter, but nothing that pinned us down). Some of our favorite places were a bit disappointing, but we discovered new favorite places too. All in all, chartering with Horizon is the only way to go and we would be hard-pressed to consider another company. They keep their boats in immaculate condition and are totally professional throughout. We will be back, again and again.

I have the highest compliments for the Virgin Island Sailing group. Melody was available, helpful in every way, and thorough in assuring that our charter went perfectly. She researched several different options and helped us secure the perfect charter for our family.
Regarding Horizon Yacht charters, they handled everything professionally and competently. We encountered a problem when I inadvertently ran over a floating mooring line and damaged the propeller. The staff from Horizon motored to our mooring on Virgin Gorda within an hour with all needed parts and replaced the propeller without delay. They were just great in providing for the best possible solution.
I recommend the Virgin Island Sailing group and Horizon Yacht charters wholeheartedly.
