9. Additional comments on your charter?

When we signed in at Sunsail, we were told, without explanation, that our reserved yacht, a 323, "Will Dream" was being reassigned to "Jamann." What we weren't told was that we had been upsized. To a 423! We boarded, unpacked and began familiarizing ourselves with the vessel. Yes, it was beamier than we had expected. It wasn't till after the starboard-side boat in the adjacent slip departed and the office was closed that we saw the "423" painted on the aft starboard hull . They corrected it the next morning, giving us a 343, but only after an anxious night and then incurring several hours of extra work for us (repacking and moving our luggage, running through our personal equipment checklist again now for this boat, filling the water tanks ourselves) and a delayed departure. We were granted an extra five hours sailing time after the contracted return hour in compensation for our delayed departure. I have chartered 10 times. It is long overdue, on charters everywhere, that there should be labels at each switch and valve. Which way to turn the valve to drain, or to secure the holding tank. Change the circuit breaker label from "Confort" to "Head floor drain." Call the circuit breaker "Cabin lights, 12v outlet" not "Cabin lights." Put a diagram at the two valves that switch among the three water tanks - even Julian who explained the boat systems didn't understand the valving. Making it easier for us makes it safer for us, for the boat, and for the owner. This concept has, after decades and centuries, been effected by making the lines different colors, and therefore easier to avoid an error. The colors are a label. Are you old enough to remember when all the lines were white? At the chart briefing, give us a pen and a handout with the places and the critical info already written. Yes, that info is available in the cruising guide, (redundancy is the key to safety) but we are trying to absorb and to write notes on his comments that are coming very fast. That handout would be a useful format. Otherwise, the chart briefing was a good, high tech presentation with superb graphics. Would I do it again? Of course. But not BVI in this season. It's become too crowded. With Sunsail? Yes, if they have the boat that I want in the place that I want at the time that I want.

BAREBOAT CHARTER REVIEW

Name: Mr. Dave Shantz
Yacht: Sunsail Oceanis 423/3/3 with Sunsail - Road Town, Tortola
Charter Dates:
1/22/11-2/5/11
Broker:
Joann Higgins
Area Cruised:
Virgin Islands

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

Staff were professional and attentive to our requests.

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

The yacht was older than expected (2005) for a Sunsail charter, and a little tired and beaten up. The bimini top req'd repairs before we could leave but they did fix it quickly. The anchor windlass stopped working on the second day, but they came out to get it going again. However, the limit switch required to be reset at least 5 times or more just to get the anchor up. Otherwise, boat o.k. and worked.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

yes

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

yes-had fans that could be run all night on battary if it got too hot

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?

It was pretty quick, but they could tell we knew what we needed. No problems with unexplained devices.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

yes- tried some new-to-us areas, like St. John Is. in US Virgin Islands, Cain Garden Bay, Saba Rock in Virgin Gorda

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

Very pleased with help from Virgin Is. Sailing. Pleased with price we got and choices provided.

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

BAREBOAT CHARTER REVIEW

Name: Mr. John Griffith
Yacht: Sunsail 39/3/2 with Sunsail - Road Town, Tortola
Charter Dates:
1/4/11-1/11/11

They were not entirely friendly, in fact some of them were a little rude

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

The yacht was clean, however we had a little problem with the anchor and the speakers on the cockpit

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Yes

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes, fans were lovely!

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?

The run through the first day was a little fast, hard to take in all the information that was being thrown our way. Perhaps a little slower of an initial introduction to the boat would be helpful

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

Loved it!

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

Nope, everything with Virgin Island Sailing was very helpful

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

Yes, for the most part everyone was very friendly and helpful.

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Yes, very clean and everything was fine. However, as I pointed out during the debriefing, I found the pillows and cushions/mattresses had somewhat of a "sweat or musty" odor.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Yes, except for the coffee percolator which needed to be replaced

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes.

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?

Yes, although I would have prefered an earlier briefing session so that we could have begun our charter sooner.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

BVI - of course!

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

I dont know how but thank you in any event.

8. May we post this review on our website?

9. Additional comments on your charter?

Some of the food (i.e. bacon, ranch dip) provided had "best before" dates before or during our week charter. I should have checked these items when they were delivered and therefore avoided throwing them out later.

Yacht: Jeanneau 39i Premier with Sunsail - Road Town, Tortola

Virgin Islands

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

Yes, very much, as usual.

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Radio had blown out speakers (poor sound), and reefing system was difficult to deal with (possibly due to worn out lines curling inside the boom). Clean, yes.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Yes.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes.

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?

Yes.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

Yes.

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

You did a great job. Thanks again.

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

The boat ("Pinguino") handled well the perfect sailing conditions (3-5 ft waves/ 15-20 knots winds) we encountered. As noted, the reefing system was not working well, it got stuck the first time we raised sail and had to sail one leg with a 2nd reef in; later had to disconnect the reefing lines in order to raise the full mainsail. Did not use the radio due to poor speakers. O/W, great boat - we did Tortola/ Beef/ Virgin Gorda/ Anegada/ Norman without any serious boat problems.
