4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and its equipment?

8. May we post this review on our website?

9. Additional comments on your charter?

Boat was laid out well however the sail rigging was very disappointing. Mainsail sheets were way to short and difficult to sail with. Single aft winches and mainsail winch without even being able to see is a joke and disappointment. Raising the main at the mast is a joke to. Having a deck light on the mast versus the spreader causing the halyard to get caught and unable to free ended two days of sailing. My next charter will be with the Moorings not Sunsail after reviewing their rigging.

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

Yes, very much so.

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Yes, for the most part all was well. The wind angle instrument and the stereo remote control at the helm never worked. We also experienced some challenges with the doors on the head in both hulls as the week went on.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

We actually bought a skillet for the boat, because the skillet on board was very small. The boat was also missing a spatula and a wire wisk.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes, boat ventilated well, but we were challenged by several of the port holes getting them open, closed and getting them to stay in the open position. They would fall closed.

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and its equipment?

They did OK. They definitely did not seem to be very familiar with this particular yacht. It's new to their fleet and they all seem to be learning it still.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

Yes, Belize in pretty unbelizeable.

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

No.

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

A couple of suggestions for the boat: 1st, un updated electronics chart would have been very helpful. They exist, I had it on my navionics app on my phone. It should be downloaded and on the chart plotter too. Second, floor mats at the entrances to the house on the boat would have been nice. We left towels on the deck all week, they worked, but a decent floor mat would have been a great touch.

10. It is our pleasure to keep you informed of relevant specials / updates for your next charter. When do you plan to charter next?

No plans for another charter just yet. But we will go again at some point. Check out the you tube video of our trip. https://youtu.be/W66yVHd2SyI

9. Additional comments on your charter?

We criticized the lifejackets - they were big blocks of foam designed for abandoning ship, and not suitable to wear while sailing. SunSail yachts in the solent have much smaller safety devices that you inflate in the event of going overboard. We were caught in a thunderstorm which damaged many instruments. SunSail were exemplary in carrying out the repairs with minimal impact on our sailing schedule.

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

Our reception at the charter base was just okay. No warm and fuzzy welcome, more of a we are busy and we will work you in when we can.

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Yacht was clean but worn. Hatch screen was broken and all the window shades in the cabins had no snaps and would not stay up. hatch was fixed before we left.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Cooking was fine and worked well. There was not much cleaning equipment to speak of.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

I would not charter another boat without A/C and Generator. The boosters were ok but fiddly.

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and its equipment?

Our check out person did a pretty good job. They got us underway in a timely manner. This was in response to not getting us on our boat until a little after six the previous night.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

BVI is a wonderful place to cruise. Couldn't get enough.

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

No you guys were great and I would book my next one through VIS. Melody was extremely helpful to first time charter people like ourselves.

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

I got what I paid for and have no complaints about that. My boat was worn but completely functional. This was my first time doing this and I answered a lot of my own questions by walking down the dock and looking at the different boats. My only mechanical issue was a dingy outboard that wouldn't start and I didn't know it till I was on a ball at Cooper Island. Emergency procedures might be gone over in more depth in the briefing. I unfortunately had to call the Coast Guard to get some assistance with a child passenger who fell in the cabin and required stitches. After being anchored in Cane Garden Bay and calling three different numbers at Sunsail and getting answering machines I had to do something. The Coast Guard had to call VISAR 3 times to get a response. It ultimately worked out and the child is fine, but I feel the charter base should have a phone that is answered 24 hours a day. I needed advice on where to go, not rescue. Maybe my fault for not asking where the hospital and or clinics were located.

10. It is our pleasure to keep you informed of relevant specials / updates for your next charter. When do you plan to charter next?

I would consider chartering again next year at the same time.

9. Additional comments on your charter?

We've sailed the Abacos a few times, but I think this time was our best trip yet. I really like the new boat design. The front seating area is a super improvement. Even though boat was a little bit smaller this year (44 ft instead of 46 ft), it actually felt bigger. One downside to the design, however, is that its very easy for the jib sheets to get caught under the lip of upper deck. Have to watch that really carefully when tacking. It appears one way they have tried to reduce that problem is with a smaller jib.. but, that jib felt too small. The boat felt under-powered under sail. And even still, those jib sheets were still getting caught. For the enjoyment of the space, the new design is clearly better. I think the boat needed a bigger jib. And, people ought to just get used to rolling in the jib before tacking, and then letting it back out once the tack is completed, rather than letting the jib wander across on its own.

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

Yes very much so!

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

We had some issues but nothing showstopping. Our generator stopped working on day 3 but Sunsail was quick to fix it first thing the next morning once we called them. Our dinghy outboard was intermittent, we should have asked for a replacement but we managed to get band-aid fixes to keep it going enough. The most impactful was that the wind vane instrument at the helm was not working and when on a port tack the helmsmen couldn't look up to the top of the mast to see the wind indicator. This made sailing a little harder in areas like the Thatch Cut where the wind shifted (we had to react to the genoa luffing).

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

For the most part, oven temperature knob came off so hard to see what the temperature was set to and you had to use pliers to light it.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes.

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and its equipment?

Very much so!

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

Incredibly!

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

It was surprisingly more crowded than I expected for the time of year. Not sure if this could have been predicted but would have influenced our choice of anchorages as we were consistently getting the last mooring or we had to anchor when none were left.

8. May we post this review on our website?

All in all a fantastic experience. The boat was fantastic in terms of age and cleanliness for the price paid.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

Yes!

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

It seemed a little half way through prep when we arrived. Not as finished and polished for a new charter group as other boats at the marina. Not sure what went wrong there. We had a sister boat in our group that was completely ready with towels, sheets and everything laid out like a hotel. When we asked about this, we were told the boat is indeed ready but the differences were obvious. We had a potentially major issue with the mainsail but managed to escape a worrying situation (see additional comments below).

Don't think so, was just more crowded than we had expected.

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

We had an issue where the mainsail got stuck and couldn't be lowered. The cause was that the block attached to the top of the mainsail on our particular boat could twist (on other Sunsail 444 boats) it was zip tied so that it could not twist. This ability to twist caused the halyard to get stuck once it was raised fully. In the end, a tremendous amount of force on the reefing line as well as the halyard manged to get the mainsail lowered and we had to improvise with a thin bit of line to ensure that the block would not be able to twist upon the next raising. I would have thought that if this zip tying system was done on one sunsail 444 the same should have been done to ALL sunsail 444 with the same block system. Getting the mainsail stuck up there would have really caused issues for us since the Sunsail service team only operates 8am to 5pm.

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

Better information about the Yacht. We believed that there was a swim platform and there was not making it much more difficult to swim and get back on boat. Ladder into water was makeshift and a line was added to hold onto!! Placement of grill was in area where we decided not to use due to safety issue and fire.

9. Additional comments on your charter?

We had a wonderful trip. Boat was provisioned well (maybe too well), left plenty behind on the boat. Dinners out were wonderful on any of the islands we went ashore. As mentioned above there were a few small issues that we dealt with. Did not realize or check before we left the dock, but the fuel tank was not topped off. Bathroom door handle kept falling off. But, nothing stopped us from having a great trip!!!

There was a problem with a head which was fixed immediately, the fuel gauges didn't work and the dinghy motor gave us problems all week long. The power winch for hoisting the sails came apart under windy conditions - actually injuring the finger of one of our crew. Other than those items, the boat performed fine.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

He'd

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and its equipment?

Yes, Simone did a great job of explaining things and getting a mechanic to fix the head. Sharlene the gal that checked us in post cruise was attentive to our concerns with the winch problems.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

Absolutely!

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

You did a great job.

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

For the most part, exceptionally good, helpful and informative. A couple of the staff (men) could work on their friendliness.

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Yes. Worked well. Had a deck leak and light burnout in port stern cabin, three slips on shower drain covers, one fall and scratch on swim ladder which has a plain nut where an acorn nut should be. All systems worked well otherwise.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

No coffee percolator, had to fire up generator to run drip machine, so all waited for captain (me) to get up.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes. No problems at all here.

5. Did the staff at Sunsail do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and its equipment?

Yes, very good job.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

5th cruise in BVI. Love it totally. Will do it over and over until I can't.

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

Could you get Seaborne airlines to stop screwing up? Yes, we didn't die in a crash, which I'm always pleased about, but cancelled flights, few choices, rebooking mess, last minute notice, took my luggage off on return. Hassles, not fatal, but we lost our first afternoon of vacation due to this.

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

VI Sailing staff friendly and helpful, once we got going. Making contact at first was a bit tough. I think some were out sailing in my BVI's instead of working. Kidding. The boat upgrade was very nice. I would use your service and Sunsail again without any hesitation. In fact, my friends/crew were talking about our next trip before we got back.

10. It is our pleasure to keep you informed of relevant specials / updates for your next charter. When do you plan to charter next?

Maybe in 6 months to a year? Different area. I was at the Tobago Keys once and had to leave due to an injury to a crew member. Have been wanting to go back ever since. But found the poverty ashore in the Grenadines more uncomfortable for visitors than elsewhere in the Caribbean. I have some negative impressions about St. Lucia, St. Viincent from other cruisers, so don't know how to make such a trip work. But it's in there, simmering in the back of my mine. My major problem with this trip to the BVI's was the overcast weather the whole time, with a few spots of sunshine. None of us control that, of course, but it's the first time in 10 trips I've seen it like this. Can we put in a sunny day guarantee next time?

1. Were the staff at Sunsail friendly and accommodating?

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

One of the single berths was not clean at all, had mold growing inside. The remainder of the yacht appeared to be clean and in working order.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Yes.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

No.

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

The insurance options in the Booking Terms & Conditions are misleading. I was planning to select Option #2 to only find out that I had already been charged for Option #1. In addition, it doesn't appear that the security deposit was collected at our time of departure.

8. May we post this review on our website?

9. Additional comments on your charter?

Captain Andrew Ollivierre was fantastic. We will consider returning, however only if we have Captain Andrew leading our next yachting vacation.

10. It is our pleasure to keep you informed of relevant specials / updates for your next charter. When do you plan to charter next?

2-3 years from now.
