BAREBOAT CHARTER REVIEW

Name: Mr. Mike Jenkins
Yacht: Moorings 51.5 Club with The Moorings - Road Town, Tortola
Charter Dates:
5/16/10 - 5/23/10
Broker:
Joann Higgins
Area Cruised:
Virgin Islands

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at The Moorings friendly and accommodating?

Yes they were very welcoming. Even at the airport where I had not expected them they had our names and a taxi (extra) waiting. nice touchwith cold drinks available.

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Yes the yatch was clean and in reasonalbly good working condition. Two heads pistons were worn and lost sea water priming we were able to adjust , Air conditioner water pump a little noisy. I noted engine compartment and all else very clean and organized. Only major problem was the dingy, the engine wasdifficult to keep running and ran quite rough until warmed up. Also dingy U bolt towing bit broke while underway. It appearedto have been broken and repaired a few times before. We had to rig different towing system. Propane oven broiler did not appear to work.

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Generally yes but I would recommend tea towels and oven mitts. I'm not sure why there would not be a propane BBQ even with cylindrers matches an charcoal seem to be messy and dangerous. A propane handheld lighter would be handy.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Good for the forward cabins. The two rear cabins lacked ventilation we had to run air conditioning at night. main salon very good ventilation.

5. Did the staff at The Moorings do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?

Yes I think a good job.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

We enjoyed the BVI very much this time. WE wnt further than before and with mixed weather we were able to see the north and south side of almost al islands. We had an enjoyable trip to Anegada as well.

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

I was pleased with the professional way things were handled. My greatest fear iWas not getting a suitable boat or company we had trouble with a boat on a previous charter. Moorings and your service were both excellent. I've not used abroker before and deffinitely would consider again.

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

We found the BVI Marine Parks have done an excellent job of maintaining snorkling sites. Some of the sites we visited were more than 20 years ago and I believe they have not diminished an that period of time even with the larger number of users. Nice time of year to travel still sverrealmooring balls available. Dinghy was a bit small for 8 adults but I was surprised at boyancy it stil had. Nice to have the hard locker and deck in the bow of the dinghy. We rented a kayak but really only used it once. We found it difficult to launch and recover off the boat. My advice for othrs may be to try it out at local anchorages on an hourly or daily rental.

8. May we post this review on our website?

9. Additional comments on your charter?

We had a great time but the Moorings was disappointing (I sailed with them several times years ago) and I'm afraid they have gotten too big. Our briefing was poor as we were "upgraded" to a Beneteau 51and I think needed better instruction about the workings of the boat. Our instrument panel didn't work initially and we had someone adjust it on the dock. He was only able to get function partially and after sailing out of Roadtown it quit working. We checked with the rep at Saba Rock and were assured that we had plenty of fuel for two weeks. The 51 has two tanks and has to be switched but we were not informed of this in the briefing or by the rep at Virgin Gorda and were told when we called in that the boat has only one tank. After calling in when we ran out of fuel the "helper boat" fixed the prob in minutes. If we had a functioning instrument panel to tell us one tank was empty or if they had told us about the switch our distress would have not been a problem. Also when the charter is to start at noon and we can't get checked our until 3:00 we've wasted 3 good hours of sailing time. All in all the trip was good in spite of the little glitches.

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at The Moorings friendly and accommodating?

For the most part - The manager did not come see us (See below)

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Clean yes but it had some electrical issues the whole trip

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Yes

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Yes

5. Did the staff at The Moorings do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?

Yes, Except I thought we had an inverter but we did not.

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

Yes, It was our 5th trip

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

Not really

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

1) "Moorings" itself seems more disorganized and not as well kept as in previous years, especially the showers. 2) The boat had an ongoing electrical issue at the panel, but we could not get assistance in a prompt manner, either by VHF or phone. 3) On the last morning, the engine would not start. Turns out the ground at the battery switch was faulty and needed "Jiggling" while the starter was engaged. I found that out myself because assistance never came. Afterwards, at the Moorings we were told a manager would come talk to us about it. That never occurred, nor has anyone contacted us. 4) We are unsure whether we will use Moorings again.

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations and we are eager to have your evaluation and impressions of your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Were the staff at The Moorings friendly and accommodating?

Yes

2. Was the yacht clean and in good working condition?

Yes, above expectations

3. Was the yacht's cooking and cleaning equipment sufficient?

Yes however they should provide more garbage bags - 2 is not enough for a week so we had to interupt our fun to find a store and buy bags.

4. Was the boat well ventilated?

Adequate, one of the staterooms smelled slightly like exaust when the generator was running - even with all windows and hatches closed

5. Did the staff at The Moorings do a good job familiarizing you with the yacht and it's equipment?

Yes, except the radio

6. Did you like the area you cruised?

Yes! Fabulous destinations - Peter Island, Anegada, Monkey Point, Bitter End, The Indians, etc... all unique and beautiful

7. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?

No

8. May we post this review on our website?

Yes

9. Additional comments on your charter?

Fabulous vacation! We had 7 + our captain on the 4600 Cat and it had plenty of room. We loved the lay out of the boat. The staterooms are large enough to be comfortable and the AC works well. Some of us spent a few nights sleeping under the stars in the trampoline. Lovely boat, amazing snorkeling, some exciting fishing along the way and pure fun and relaxation. We loved the freedom of having our own boat to stop anywhere, anytime. None of us sail but really enjoyed the relaxation of the 1 to 3 hours of sailing each day. *** ok to post anonymously ***
